Google AI Overview ads launch on mobile in U.S.

Google has officially announced the launch of its innovative AI Overview Ads, which will start appearing for mobile users in the United States. The journey to this point began five months ago during a significant announcement at Google Marketing Live 2024. Despite the anticipation built over these months, the actual implementation of these ads had yet to be seen—until now.

The new ad format integrates directly below the AI-generated answers in search overviews. Google provides an example image showing a typical Shopping ad under a “Sponsored” label. This strategic positioning aims to align the ads closely with the organic content generated by AI, possibly increasing relevance and engagement from users.

The appearance of these ads depends significantly on the nature of the user's query. According to a Google spokesperson, if there is a commercial intent present, such as inquiries involving products or services, users may see AI Overview ads either above, below, or even amidst the AI’s response. This includes questions like “how to remove grass stains from jeans,” where commercial product suggestions are seamlessly integrated into the answer.

From an advertiser's perspective, participating in AI Overview Ads requires no additional effort. Google has clarified that these ads will draw from existing AI-powered Search ads, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns. Ads will be included based on their ability to win an auction and align with the query and the provided information without the need for new actions from advertisers.

However, Google has not expanded its reporting capabilities to segment data from AI Overview Ads specifically. As such, advertisers will not receive detailed insights into the performance of these ads within the new format, and there is no option to opt-out. While occupying a prime spot on search results pages could potentially drive traffic and sales, the effectiveness of this placement remains unclear due to the lack of data sharing, despite Google’s assurances that these ads are deemed helpful by users.
