Google’s AI search summaries officially have ads

Google is introducing advertisements into its AI-generated summaries, meaning users will now encounter products within some of these AI Overviews during searches. For instance, when you search for methods to remove a grass stain from clothing, Google's AI response will not only provide practical tips but also suggest certain products that might assist in the stain removal. These product recommendations will appear under a "sponsored" label, and according to Google spokesperson Craig Ewer, will only be shown if a search query has a commercial slant.

This development follows Google’s testing of ads within AI Overviews since May. The company decided on an extensive rollout because it believes this approach facilitates swift connections between users and relevant businesses, products, and services, precisely when needed. As of now, advertisements will be displayed within AI Overviews exclusively in the United States and only on mobile devices. Similarly, Microsoft includes ads in its Copilot chatbot, having recently updated the way they are presented in responses.

Alongside ads, Google is making adjustments to the layout of AI Overviews. After trials in August, Google will now feature cited webpages more prominently on the right side of these summaries, as this change has reportedly increased traffic to the referenced websites compared to past designs.

Additionally, Google is launching AI-organized search pages, a novel feature that curates a customized results page with pertinent information rather than merely listing links. At present, this functionality is accessible for mobile search users in the United States, specifically for queries related to recipes and meal ideas.

These innovations reflect Google's strategy to enhance user interactions by integrating advertising and improving how information is displayed, aiming to provide a more efficient and effective search experience.
